Solidarity BBQ shows widespread support for strikers on Molson Coors picket line

"We're not just fighting for ourselves, we are fighting for the future."

Toronto, February 8, 2017 - Solidarity for workers on strike against beer giant Molson Coors has been coming from the public as well as the labour community in this David and Goliath fight for good jobs, retirement security and decent working conditions.

Members of the Canadian Union of Brewery and General Workers (CUBGW), Component 325 have been on strike against Molson Coors since January 12, 2017 after the multi-million dollar company refused to take concessions off the table.

“We would much rather be working,” says CUBGW President Robert Folk. “But we’re proud to have refused to be bullied into taking a bargain basement agreement. We had to say, enough is enough.”

To show the solidarity behind these workers, a BBQ is taking place on Thursday, February 9 at noon. The gathering point is at the UFCW National Office at 61 International Boulevard, in Etobicoke. Members and their supporters will march to the Molson Coors picket line at 33 Carlingview Drive.

CUBGW President Robert Folk and Elisabeth Ballermann, Secretary-Treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) will be on site to speak to the media. CUBGW members are members of NUPGE.

“Molson Coors’s behaviour is a textbook example of why income inequality has increased,” says Ballermann. “Everyone concerned about growing income inequality in Canada and the loss of middle-class jobs should be supporting the brewery workers.”
